The great African American scholar and activist, W. Du Bois remarked at the opening of this century that the problem of the 20th century was that of color. Since that time, much has changed in American race relations, but, today, as the United States stands ready to enter a new century, the issue of race still remains as one of the most important and perplexing facing our nation. To better understand some of the issues and trends in American race relations that might confront us in the next century, this survey polled the racial attitudes of young Americans between the ages of 18 and This the first generation to be born after the modern civil rights movement of the s and as such they are the first to grow up in an American without formal barriers to racial equality.
